My dad is 90 and he’s getting baptised

A 90 year old man in Worcester was recently christened. This is really amazing that he would do this late in life! Do you know of anyone christened at this age?

His son Brian, aged 64, from Bridgend, said: “He took me to one side at Christmas and said, ‘I’ve got something to tell you – I haven’t been christened’.

“He’s getting to the end of his life and when he gets something into his head he has to do it.

“I’m delighted about it. It’ll be an occasion; all the family will be there.”

Retired priest Rev Jenny Hayward, who works part-time at South Hayes, will be taking the St David’s Day service and was approached about the christening by the family.

She said she has needed special permission from the Diocese of Worcester.

Recent Christening Traditions in South Africa

Here’s a very interesting article about christenings in South Africa by Zenoyise Madikwa.

Father Mdlela says the baby is supposed to wear a white gender-neutral gown.

“Babies should wear a long, formal white gown, a symbol of blamelessness and purity,” he says.

Hangwani Nengovhela of Rubicon Clothing says the latest trend for baby boys is to dress them in a christening outfit that does not look like a dress.

Nengovhela says traditionally boys wore the same gowns as girls, but today many boys are baptised in suits for little boys.

“Many suits come with matching jackets, most with matching hats that are boyish rather than girlie bonnets. These days you can tell the difference between christening clothes designed for a baby boy and or a baby girl.

“A masculine christening outfit may come in christening rompers, suits and tuxedos,” she says.

Nengovhela adds that accessories such as shoes, socks, bibs, blankets and bonnets add an extra special touch to any outfit.

She says when choosing christening wear for girls, the sky is the limit

A New Alternative to Christening Coming to Britain?

From an upcoming study about changing gender roles in Britain, the Herald reports:

The authors will also suggest the development of a civil ceremony for new babies, to offer an alternative to a christening service. They say that parents would benefit from an opportunity to make public vows about their commitment to supporting the child.
